Multiple people were stabbed in a synagogue in Monsey, New York, late Saturday evening, according to the Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council for the Hudson Valley region.

The council said on Twitter that five patients with stab wounds were taken to local hospitals. All victims were Hasidic, and two of them were in critical condition, the organization said.

"One of the victims was stabbed at least 6 times. The fifth/least severe case had a cut in his hand," the council tweeted.

The stabbing occurred at Rabbi Rottenburg's Shul during a Chanukah celebration, CBS New York reported.

The New York Police Department's counterterrorism unit tweeted that it was "closely monitoring the reports of multiple people stabbed at a synagogue in Monsey, NY."

New York's Attorney General Letitia James tweeted that she was "deeply disturbed by the situation unfolding in Monsey."

"There is zero tolerance for acts of hate of any kind and we will continue to monitor this horrific situation," she added.
