The story facilities on an unlikely pair of heroes: pilot Brodie Torrance (Gerard Butler), en route from Singapore to Japan, and bearing the delicate disgrace of an previous incident during which he punched and choked out an unruly passenger, and Louis Gaspare (Mike Colter), a convicted assassin who's being extradited because the movie opens, and whose help the pilot seeks when he discovers his prisoner’s background as a army commando. After leaving the aircraft’s stranded occupants to hunt assist elsewhere on the island, Torrance and Gaspare — no first names right here, bro — return to find that a violent militia has already killed two of the passengers, with plans to ransom the others for money by posting movies on-line during which they threaten execution until a bounty is paid.
Working from a spare screenplay by Charles Cumming and J.P. Davis, director Jean-François Richet — a French filmmaker who has jumped the pond to make Hollywood B-movies (“Assault on Precinct 13”) — retains issues transferring at a quick clip, with no time for extraneous backstory or questions. Who's Gaspare? What are the circumstances of his crime? Was he falsely accused? Can he be trusted? Has he reformed, and is he now in search of redemption? Who cares?
The filmmakers know higher than to muddle up this story with cliches, particularly in terms of these, let’s face it, inventory characters. The thriller and ambiguity surrounding one half of this dynamic duo really make for a much less formulaic — and subsequently higher — film. The one digressions from the rumble within the jungle are a handful of scenes set within the operation heart of Torrance’s airline, the place a hard-boiled disaster administration knowledgeable (Tony Goldwyn) is proven coordinating a rescue try by a crew of personal mercenaries, led by a no-nonsense Remi Adeleke and armed with an arsenal of very, very massive weapons.
Early on, Torrance telephones his daughter in California, whom he hopes to go to after this flight. “I’ll be there with loads of time,” he says, with nearly laughably naive optimism. “There received’t be any delays.”
He’s mistaken, after all, on the primary rely. However by way of “Aircraft’s” brisk and layover-free flight time, the second half of his assertion bears out. “Aircraft” is a shot of adrenaline and fast-paced, brain-free enjoyable. What extra may you ask for in the midst of January?
