Texas surpassed 8,000 new daily coronavirus cases on Wednesday, making it the state's all-time record for new cases over 24 hours.

The state reported 8,076 new cases, according to KTRK.

Last week, the state had three consecutive single-day new records, as cases across the entire US surge.

Texas is also reporting its second-highest death toll in 24 hours, with 57 new coronavirus related deaths, KTRK reported. According to the outlet, close to 7,000 people are hospitalized in the state.

The state has had more than 172,000 COVID-19 cases with over 2,500 deaths, as of Wednesday.

Last week, Gov. Greg Abbott paused the state's reopening plan, Business Insider previously reported.

According to CBS, Abbott called the situation in Texas a "massive outbreak," last week. At that point, the state just surpassed close to 5,500 daily COVID-19 cases.

Abbott said businesses that already reopened could continue to operate a limited capacity.

"The last thing we want to do as a state is go backwards and close down businesses," Abbott said in a statement. "This temporary pause will help our state corral the spread until we can safely enter the next phase of opening our state for business."

Cases are rapidly going up across the US, Business Insider reported. On Wednesday, a tally from The Washington Post reported that the US surpassed 50,000 coronavirus cases for the first time.

The US has recorded at least 2.6 million coronavirus cases and over 128,000 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University
