A US F-15 C Eagle fighter jet has crashed into the North Sea with one pilot aboard during a training mission that went wrong.
The jet crashed at around 9.40 a.m. Monday local time. It was part of the US Air Force's 48th fighter wing and was based out of the Royal Air Force (RAF) base at Lakenheath, in Suffolk, England.
An RAF Lakenheath spokesperson confirmed the crash in a statement to Business Insider.
The cause of the crash is unknown, said the spokesperson. The jet had been flying as part of a routing training mission. UK search-and-rescue personnel were dispatched to try to find the pilot.
BBC News Defense correspondent Jonathan Beale tweeted the aircraft had been flying as part of a four-jet formation.
Lakenheath is a major base for US personnel in Britain.
