Here's how Democrats will elect their presidential nominee over the next several months
What's at stake in the primary?
Mississippi allocates a total of 36 pledged delegates to the convention. Twenty-three are allocated between the state's four congressional districts, with thirteen at-large and PLEO delegates allocated at the state level.
As in most other states, candidates must earn over the minimum threshold of 15% of the vote in a given district or statewide to earn any delegates.
Who does the polling say is ahead?
A Data for Progress poll of Mississippi released on March 8 showed 77% of likely Mississippi Democratic primary voters supporting former VP Joe Biden compared to 22% who supported Sen. Bernie Sanders. The poll, conducted from March 4 to 7, had a margin of error of plus or minus five percentage points.
Biden is heavily favored to win Mississippi due to his sweeping Super Tuesday victories in similar Southern states where black voters make up a substantial proportion of the Democratic primary electorate, including Alabama, Arkansas, and Tennessee.
According to FiveThirtyEight's primary election forecast, Biden has a 99 in 100 (99%) chance of winning the most pledged delegates out of Mississippi compared to 1 in 100 (0.7%) chance for Sanders.
