Investigators are examining the circumstances behind the apparent kidnapping after she confessed to staging her own abduction, citing a strained relationship between her and her mother, sources told WABC-TV.

An Amber Alert was sent out on Tuesday at 10:45 a.m. local time, calling on residents to help locate the then missing teen. She reappeared Tuesday afternoon "safe and unharmed," the NYPD 40th precinct tweeted.
"WE HAVE A VICTORY TODAY!! Karol has been found!!!" the precinct wrote in the tweet. "Thank you to all who have worked very hard to track down the people involved in this case!!!"

Karol confessed to faking her kidnapping shortly after she was reunited with her family and taken in for questioning, The New York Times reported. Karol's mother, who the teen allegedly described as "overprotective," according to The Times, reportedly wanted to move them back to Honduras, which the daughter did not want to do.
Karol reportedly knew the four men in the car, but her mother did not, police told WABC-TV. The four men have yet to be located by police, but were described as adult males wearing dark colored clothing.
It is unclear if or what charges would be filed against Karol and the four men.
